Latest Updates
A map is essential for this walk, as there is very little signage to follow - nothing at all between Caldicot and the houses on the edge of Penhow and a little sporadic for the stretch between there and where the route joins the Usk Valley Walk. From the point where the route joins the Usk Valley Walk at the start of the descent down the hill, it`s easy to follow and well signed, with some stunning views across the Usk Valley itself, when you get out into the open fields. The lane just after Little Barn (after the Slade Wood and subsequent fields section) was closed to traffic, due to subsidence after recent floods....

Easy flat walk with the chance to visit the museum of the railway tunnel in Sudbrook and the historic village of Mathern, with the church dedicated to St Tewdric, once King of Gwent who is interred there, and the private Palace of Mathern, which apparently has grade 2 listed pigsties....

As you approach the bank of the river, the spans of the 1990s new Severn crossing bridge become visible ahead, the route heads along the sea defences above the saltmarsh on a good path to Sudbrook. The Slow Way now nears the old Severn Bridge, and arrives via an anciently churchy end of the village of Mathern, followed by a path edging of a zone of massive warehousing which is so well landscaped that you hardly know they are there until the final approach to the bridge. As it arrives alongside the M48, the path dips down and the Wales Coast Path departs left through the motorway underpass into Chepstow while the Slow Way continues on, heading uphill again to join the two and a half miles of the cycle/footway across the old Severn Bridge. Despite being hard by the motorway (and a motorway service station rather ghostly since the M4 was rerouted to the new bridge in the 1990s), Aust is a quiet little place with a good pub. The nearest is either back in Chepstow, or several miles further on south at Severn Beach (good rail links) or the village of Easter Compton (some buses), both of which are reachable using ongoing Slow Ways....

The only exception being at the end of the last field leading on to the lane into Bishton, which was completely overgrown, but at least there is a gate close by that can be climbed. Photo 1 - A green lane leading into the fields section after Magor...

No real comments to add from the last review although the long straight stretch south of Rogiet is very long and uninspiring! Mostly all easy to follow and some nice views. No access problems from memory....

In the last field before hitting the housing estate you need to make sure you cross over into the field to the right half way and head towards the houses or you end up in someone's back garden next to a Brook....

I’ve uploaded an improved version of this walk - see Newcal 5. I experienced a couple of access problems with Newcal 4:. 1) Coming from Newport, the path into Llanwern was blocked by a construction site. Access may be reinstated when the new housing is finished, but in Sep 2021 the route was impassable. 2) The footpath east of Bishton was totally overgrown (despite being clearly signposted from the village)...

Walk this routeThe route does not go into town centre, so if you need supplies use the Tescos near the station. From Chepstow station, Calche two follows the NCN cycle route with blue signs and red 42 numbers all the way to the A466 where the route goes under that M48 access road and heads into Wyelands Estate pastures. The end of the walk is along a main road to the Slate Cross in Caldicot Town Centre (photo 5)....
